Frozen Steering Wheel

Trying to remove steering wheel from my M to replace w/ new one. Got nut off & tried wheel puller. The thing won't budge. Have been told to torch collar on rear of wheel and shock it w/ hose to crystallize the rust inside. Wheel will free up. Is this the right approach? Don't want to crack or warp steering column. Anyone done this or have different suggestion? Thanks.
