Yeah, I just had that issue on an f-20 that the float wasn't shutting off the fuel and it would run rich. The black on the plugs is an indication that it is running rich also. The coil issue is a different story and I'm not really experienced with it. But from the sound of things, you have it hooked up properly, although originally it was probably a positive ground from all the posts I have read about. Also check the resistance across the terminals of the coil. It should be about 3 ohms, if its a lot lower than that it will pass too much current and become hot and burn the points VERY quickly.
