The first thing I discovered when I purchased my 350 U was that the charging system was weak and failing. At the same time, a schematic for converting to a GM 10-S alternator was posted on this board. Since I had to do something anyway, converting to 12 volt seemed like a good idea at the time (and still makes sense to me today when I consider that the 560 is also a 12 volt, so is the boat, and the pickup, and the....you get the picture). I DID keep the original generator for posterity, and as for "looks", my alternator and coil resistor are tucked neatly up under that expansive 350 hood, totally out of sight. The generator bracket is still there, only one new bracket had to be fabbed to mount the alternator (with a slot in it to also act as a belt tensioner). I am satisfied with my conversion and the functional results. If it was openly visible I would do what Red and RB have done, convert the 6 volt generator to 12 volt, and mount a new delco regulator. I also agree with the purists that it has to preserved for future generations. That's why I kept my old parts. Just my .02
