Cost: An entire conversion (alternator, 12 volt battery and lights) runs less than the cost of just a rebuilt 6 volt generator. And there's no $40 mechanical regulator to get out of whack and fry your battery. Reliability: Alternators live a LOT longer than generators - especially under hot, dirty conditions. Compatability: Can jump your 12 volt tractor with a car or truck (though generally it's the other way around - I'm jumping a dead vehicle with my tractor). Can't do that with a 6 volt tractor! Convenience: I share one 12 volt battery between my Super M and my boat. Haven't figured out yet how to use 'em both at once - why own a battery for each machine??? I agree on one point - a 12 volt conversion is a poor subsitute for keeping your carb, ignition, etc. in top condition. But unless you're a purist and don't plan on doing any real work with your tractor, 6 volt electrics don't have much going for them.
