Griffin, it is possible to use a battery powered external coil and a mags set of points to switch coil current and then the mags distributor still has to be wired n configured n used to distribute the spark to the proper spark plug. Ive seen it done but ITS NOT an engineerign proper way to rig up an Ignition in my opinion. Regardless if its a mag or a jury rigged mag and external battery powered coil, the FIRST SUSPECT for non firing is the points. Make sure they are gapped correct, are indeed fully opening n fully closing as the rotor turns, and they ARE NOT badly burned or pitted and replace if so. A point file may get them cleaned enough to fire in the short run. John T (who knows ignition theory but dont know beans about IHC mags)
