I just bought a super C that I saw run before I brought it home. Now it appears not to be firing.Still 6 volt.A coil has been added to the side of the mag.Was there ever a reason to have an external coil or was this added because the mag is bad?Can someone explain the purpose of the coil & how I can test this setup? Thanks for any help.I'm still learning.

Griffin, it is possible to use a battery powered external coil and a mags set of points to switch coil current and then the mags distributor still has to be wired n configured n used to distribute the spark to the proper spark plug. Ive seen it done but ITS NOT an engineerign proper way to rig up an Ignition in my opinion.

Regardless if its a mag or a jury rigged mag and external battery powered coil, the FIRST SUSPECT for non firing is the points. Make sure they are gapped correct, are indeed fully opening n fully closing as the rotor turns, and they ARE NOT badly burned or pitted and replace if so. A point file may get them cleaned enough to fire in the short run.

John T (who knows ignition theory but dont know beans about IHC mags)

Are you sure you have a mag? I'm no expert but I have never seen a SC with a mag.

The only stupid people on this forum are the few who think they never make a mistake. I won't burden you with the numerous times I have missed the obvious. Good luck with you SC

That was a way to fix a bad/weak mag. Not the best way to do things but it worked. I'd first check to see if you have voltage at the coil. If you do you probably have bad point and or condenser. I would replace both and be done with it.
