40 years ago when these low ash oils first hit the market, it was my understanding Cat developed the oil. I know they where available from other sources before IH had it, or at least in my area. This is reasonable, as everyone would have had the same problems, and in 1965 Cat would have been a much bigger player the IH. I use these oils in everything, cars , trucks, tractors, even my 4 cycle lawn mower. It's 30+ years old as the IH dealer loaded it in my pickup in 1975, the day I paid him for the new 1066. Until 2 years ago the mower mowed 1/2 acre every summer, and the one item still original is the 4 cycle engine. Diesel engines are good for 10,000 hours, gas 5,000, most cars and pickups 350,000 miles, between rebuilds using these oils. Sure they may be expensive, check out the cost of rebuild parts.
