Alternator Conversion

I've just converted my M from 6V+grd. to 12V-grd. using the alternator kit purchased on this site. The instructions indicate that it may be necessary to run the tractor at full throttle to excite the regulator. Well, sometimes this works, sometimes it doesn't. When it doesn't work, I momentarily run a jumper from the No.1 terminal over to the Bat. terminal to excite the regulator. This is a pain. What else can I do?
