Take a Dremel tool & cut through the adapter until reaching the threads. Repeat in 2-3 places. Take a small chisel or punch & collapse the shell inward.
No Dremel tool? This is a great excuse to get one!
Oh--you can also use a hacksaw blade (if it will slide in the opening).
