A Transmission Seal Job

I'm getting ready to fix the seals on my A's transmission/differential assembly. It leaks on both sides. I feel pretty good about it, but I do have a few questions before I start: 1. Why does it leak when it is standing still? This makes me think the oil level must be above the level of the seals, which means the bearings and seals are submerged in oil all the time. I know the trans holds 5 qts, but is it normal to have the seals below the oil level? On the engine, the crankshaft bearings and seals are above the "full" oil level. Is the trans. different? Can I check the oil level without draining it all out to see I have 5 qts? 2. I hear there are both felt and rubber seals available. I have read that the felt ones are too thin, so that two must be sandwiched together for the proper thickness. It makes sense to me to slide the seal over the end of the differential shaft, and then slide the shaft into the differential to avoid pushing the seal into the case. Does this make sense? Also, Central tractor sells what it calls "Rear Axel Seals" for a 'A,' but I would say they are for the rear axel: down where the wheel goes, and not the differential. Is this the right part? Or should I go to NAPA? What kind of specs. does NAPA need to get me the right seal? I guess shaft diameter, but do they need thickness or other info as well? I see I went on a bit, but thanks for reading through all that. I appreciate any experience/advice you can share.
