You must have been around aviators. Thats exactly how its done on most small planes. If you get carb ice you pull the Carb Heat cable that diverts a small amount of hot air from around the muffler into the intake tube to melt out the ice. Sometimes a large piece of ice will go through the carb causing the engine to cough a little just enough to wake up the pilot.
