Ignition Problem

I just got my new rebuilt M home and I can't get it to start. The hauler drove it on his trailer two days ago but it would not start when he got to my place. Its a 48 model with a mag. The engine was recently rebuilt and the 6 volt system works hard to spin the engine. How can I test to be sure the mag is firing? Also why is it that when I try to jump start directly to the starter the starter does not turn--only get sparks yet the starter turns fine from the battery on the tractor? I wanted to spin the starter with a 12 volt battery ( after disconnecting the 6 volt of course).
