Do not split the tractor yet.

Disconnect the starter from the start terminal to the push button. If the starter has a wire going to the ignition coil or resistor, remove that as well.

With only the main battery cable hooked to the big terminal on the solenoid, use a jumper wire from that big (hot) terminal to the S terminal. The starter should engage and turn the engine. when the wire is removed, it should stop. If it does the real problem is in the wireing.

That is easily fixed. Let me know soon,
