Where did the value of 1.6 ohms originate? When IH began to use the Delco alternators on tractors in the mid 1970's, they used a 25 ohm wirewound resistor for the exciter circuit. Lots of people love the bulb to prevent feedback to the ignition, but it is the least durable method. I think the resistor is the best, diode is next and bulb last. Resistors up to 50 ohms work fine- I have verified by trying them. I would not use less than 25 ohms. Use at least a 5 watt resistor.
