H with a mag

ok, i recently took on a project. an H farmall that had the mag removed and worked on.. when it was put back on it would produce spark.. but backfired through the intake.. that told me the timing was 180 degrees off.. then the tractor sat for 7-9 years ,,, somewhere in there.. anyways i found the timing was indeed 180 degrees off but i cant get any spark out of it.. is there anything i can check on it?? or do i just need to throw it away and put a distributor on it? what are some things i can check?? i know im getting voltage to the magneto but other then that i dont know anything about them. Im only 19 and have lots to learn. basically all i mess with is diesels and a few gassers with distributors.
