There are a lot of pictures of painted magnetoes in the book, but I thought the text was pretty clear - it was masked off. The picture on page 52 looks like that mag may have paint on it but if you look at the same tractor today, the mag is unpainted. Maybe it has been stripped off. The tractor has been repainted over the years, but doesn't look like it ever had a detailed restoration so stripping off seems unlikely. Of course, the mag may have been changed out, which could also be the reason a painted mag shows up on an original tractor. I have never seen a painted mag on an original tractor (although there are a lot of tractors I haven't seen). In any case, I don't think they got painted at the factory. The cast flanges probably were painted before the mag was assembled.
