Hi I was just reading the Farmall letter series book and wanted to ask you a question? Different places in the book it says that painting of the Magneto is a gray area. I would really like to know what is correct for a restoration on a letter series. Being that I dable in this a little I would like to make mine as correct as possible for a potental buyer. Also the J4 cub magneto also. I would imagine some of the newer ones with the aluminum mount probly were polished but I would like to hear from you on this subject. JON

Correct Police? Do I look like a Deere guy?

The original photos of tractors on the line are a little hard to make out from the scan. The Cub has what looks like a piece of cardboard over the mag:

This Farmall M has something that looks like a paper bag over the mag:

Ealier photo, but this F-12 clearly has a shield over the magneto

Wanna know why some tractors have paint jobs that look as old as originals but aren't?

There are a lot of pictures of painted magnetoes in the book, but I thought the text was pretty clear - it was masked off. The picture on page 52 looks like that mag may have paint on it but if you look at the same tractor today, the mag is unpainted. Maybe it has been stripped off. The tractor has been repainted over the years, but doesn't look like it ever had a detailed restoration so stripping off seems unlikely. Of course, the mag may have been changed out, which could also be the reason a painted mag shows up on an original tractor.

I have never seen a painted mag on an original tractor (although there are a lot of tractors I haven't seen). In any case, I don't think they got painted at the factory. The cast flanges probably were painted before the mag was assembled.

See I was under the asumption that at the factory they painted off most everything and very rarly masked off much. JON

Thats why its a "gray" area,he dont know! I have seen some that were on original unrestored tractors painted and some not.Seen factory pics with them not painted.Look at the Cub on page 52.The section directly under the square cap looks painted while the front section near the dist cap looks polished,at least to me anyways.Wish the yhad and used color film back then.

While I would not even begin to debate with the great Jim Becker and Guy Fay,I can honestly say I have seen ORIGINAL UNRESTORED,UNREPAINTED tractors that have had the mag painted.I understand IH dealers offerd the repaints, but the 2 I have seen painted I know for a fact, and have(had, hes now deceased) the original owner to verify that these 2 were indeed painted,at the factory or at a minimum the dealer, one is an H, the other an M, both 1943s.5 years ago when I was restoring my M I used his M,along with Guys book to restore mine.In all honesty,I dont care if it was painted or not,I prefer t oshine mine up and let them stand out, even though I really hate magnetos!
