I wish I had a picture of one. All the micrometers I’ve seen read like the following: The scale under the knob that goes from 0 to 0 (10) is the number in the first decimal place (the 1 in 0.100). Each of those 10 increments should be divided into four parts, (you mentioned only two) each being one fourth of 0.100 or .025. Each of the 25 marks is actually 0.001 on the knob. That being said, on the 3 inch micrometer 2.373 would read with the knob past the 3 (0.300) two full revolutions (.050) of the knob plus another 23 on the rotating knob (0.300+ 0.050 + 0.023=0.373). Hope I explained this good enough.
