.....is that clutch housing new before, after or during the problem, I'd check the alignment and make sure it is engaging wher it should. I know how the starter is set and does not leave alot of room for adjustment but maybe it is necessary. This sounds just like a car starter that has that grinding/whining noise when it spins and chews up starters and ring gears. The problem on cars is that the gears are to close together. My bet is that the replacement bell housing is not perfectly aligned and your starter is only slightly engaging or engaging to tight... but I'm wrong alot!!
