Gas may be sloshing out the carb gasket if part of it is missing even though the float is working well. Mike's got the right idea, but it may be leaking gas and that may not be affecting how it runs. If it is not sucking air, try opening the main fuel screw a little (1/2 turn at a time). They take more fuel under load than they do without load.
