Air will make an engine pop so it is coming in around the intake gasket or the carb is sucking air through its gasket. Take your unlit propane torch and blow propane around the gasket with the engine at a high idle, if you can hear the engine smooth out you know you have a leak. Popping can be from too lean a mix in the carb so carb reset may help. The tractor at high rpm could have a valve sticking but unlikely...good luck..Mike in Exeter Ontario
