Int. 460 tach. cable not turning

I have found that thr reason my tach is not working is because the cable is not getting driven by distributor,so something is not working inside the dist.......I do not want to take the gear drive off the side of the dist. yet untill I talk to someone first that has allready had one apart..what do you think is wrong that it does not spin?If I take it off the side of the dist.,will it get out of time?...I put the cable in a drill and it runs tach . fine ..
