super A conversion to 12 volts

Anyone have any experience doing it. My 80 year Father-in law uses it once a month maybe. Every time he uses it the battery is down or it will not start until the battery has run down. He then hand cranks it in about 10 minutes. I thought it would be easier to convert to 12 volts and then he can jump it off with his truck. Any thoughts and insights.
