I going to add my 10 cents here (inflation you know). My guess is that the starter drive was buggered up when it was still 6 volts. The 12 volt battery will spin the starter faster, causing the drive to move into the flywheel faster, and engage harder. If your starter drive is not fully engaging in the flywheel, it is either because the teeth on the flywheel or starter drive are preventing it or the twist in the starter armature has a burr on it preventing the drive from moving to the end of the shaft. The way the drive is designed, once the teeth begin to mesh into the ring gear the twist on the armature pushes it even harder into the ring gear. Actually, the harder the engine turns over, the more force is applied to the drive to keep it meshed with the ring gear! As many here already know I have an M that was the only loader tractor on the farm from 1965 to 1995 and was fired up at least twice every day to do chores. It was converted to 12 volts in the late 60’s and I have replaced the starter once since then. (It’s a 1950 and that was the original I replaced.) HOWEVER, I did have problems with the OEM spring style starter drive giving me fits. I finally found a heavy duty clutch style at a part house several years ago that cost more than the OEM, but it was the end of the starter problems, period!
