SUPER M STARTER RODS

my '52 stage 1 super m has the starter pedal that attaches to the steering post by means of a bracket. I never thought anything about it until I viewed an illustration from my operators manual. My manual was published in april of 1952, the same period my tractor was made. The picture shows a simple short rod inserted through a drilled hole in the steering post that directly contacts the starter button. i removed my pedal bracket and it found that my steering post has this through hole for the short rod also. My grandfather took pictures of the tractor the day he bought it and it came with the pedal style starter rod. was the pedal style an option? is my current setup correct? thanks!
