ok the black n white wires coming from under the flywheel are both alternator wires. One is for the lights only,(thinking its the white one)and one with the diode,is black, these will be parallel into a two wire connector.a test light will prove which one is what by starting it,and the brighter of the 2 will be the headlights.(i guess diodes have some resistance).most mowers I see have a yellow wire for the coil-magneto ground till it gets onto the block.theres usually a insulated post near the throttle and governor linkages that holds the end of the coil-magneto ground(small black) and the yellow magneto (switch) ground together and this wire will be grounded by the starter switch.ya can kill it by grounding the same insulated bolt to the block in a fix like you were in.the safety switches on most have 2 parts too btw,one side for the magneto kill and one side to disable the starter solenoid.usually the yellow wires on the safety switches are also for coil-magneto to ground.hope this makes some sense and helps.
