There are at least two different types of aftermarket 9 speeds. One was made by Heisler (out of business and no longer supported) and M&W which is part of some company with some level of current support. I have a Heisler in a 1951 M and it is operated by a gear shift type handle to the left of the standard gear shift. I have seen them for sale in the classifieds on this site on ocassion. Might be worth looking for or place a wanted ad. Good luck as I really like my Heisler which has 4 additional gears and speeds between the standard 4th and 5th.
