Good advice! I might add that the shift lever is spring loaded in the upward direction. If the pin is well worn, it may have a groove in it which will require the shift lever be pushed down before it can be pushed or driven out. Just driving on it without pushing down on the lever may break something. Once you get the soft plugs out you can push down on the lever and push the pin out with your finger or a small tool.
