I converted my H over to 12 volt last fall and I have the same problem using just a resistor. I think a resistor is needed to "load" the alternator into a charging mode at startup. I just throttle my H back to a slow idle and turn off the ignition switch and it shuts down promptly. I guess the resistor and diode in combination would be the correct fix and the load would flow to the alternator through the diode but couldn't backfeed back through the diode to the switch so it could keep running.
