Help- IH 140 has no spark.

The tractor is a 1964 IH-140 6 volt. It was running fine when parked in the shop a week ago. Now it has no spark. I pulled a plug wire and grounded a new plug to the tractor. No spark when I turned it over. Anything simple and easy to check for? As a side note, the same thing happen years ago with a 140 that I borrowed from a neighbor. We finially gave up trying to get it started. We were towing it to his house with a chain. I was steering the tractor and decided to try one last thing. I dropped it into four gear and it immediately started. Coincidence or a trick that might work again?
