If you've only had the tractor a short time and this is the first time you had the filter housing off then there's really no way to know just how long that there hasn't been a filter installed. What damage has been done is done which if it runs without smoke or knock why worry. Just put in a filter for the future and your own piece of mind that a portion of the oil is getting properly filtrated.
