The problem is likely to be a bad detent. Remove cover as Fred said. Remove shift rail assy. from the cover. Balls and springs ride the rails to keep the gears in mesh. On the first and second slide rail you'll find a broken spring under the ball.

Up till then, this tractor had been running a corn grinder and pulling a trailer. It had new unfilled rear tires and no wheel weights.
