It's a pretty simple job to take the transmission cover off to check it out. I think it's 12 bolts, you will probably need a new gasket. THere is nothing in your way, it comes straight up and goes in pretty easy. I would suspect either worn gears or bad bearings, in which case you got a big job ahead of you, or lots of wear in the shifter mechanism, maybe a bent shifter fork. If it's a bent fork, you might be able to get it straightened and/or welded (if it's cracked) or start calling salvage yards. When you put the cover back on, just put the shifter in neutral and move the gears by hand so none are engaged and it should slip right in.
