Farmall w/o a cylinder head number

So, I tore into a U-6 I have b/c I am gonna put it in a Farmall M I have. I decided that before I get too far along I would check the top side of the motor. So, I pulled the valve cover to look at the valve train. Well, I was first confused when I saw no oil line across the top. Well, I started looking more closely, and I couldn't see a part number. Looked even more closely and saw, there isn't one. At some point the cylinder head number had been ground off smooth. On another C-264 I have, the casting part number had been ground off and another number had been stamped in place of it. Has anyone ever seen this before? Was this common place practice? Maybe someone knows a little bit more about this.
