On my 'A' the problem was a stripped bolt that was supposed to hold the oil pan on tight. It didn't and there was a little gap there. Water could run down the side of block and from surface tension or whatever would run around the lip of the oil pan and seep into the little crack. Sure confused me until I actually saw it happen.
