It might be a broken head bolt or a surface irregularity causing the head gasket issue. I had a gasket go out on mine, and it was a broken bolt on the exhaust manifold side of the head.

If you pull the head, take a look at the valve face height. If those valves aren�t close to even with the surface of the head it might cause hard starting. If so, it�s time to take it to the machine shop and get the seats replaced and get that compression back up to spec.
