I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again. When I was growing up, we had a 560 gas. Put about 6,000 hours on it before the TA went out, and we used it a LOT! When we plowed or cultivated, we pulled the TA to turn around on each end. Dad had a square baler and always baled in 2nd with the TA back. I sold the tractor back in the late 1980’s with about 11,000 hours on it and it still had that first replacement TA in it. When you use the TA on the sprag type, pull the lever back quickly, put it ahead quickly. Don’t feather it or you’ll burn out the direct clutch. Don’t pull the TA back when you are going down hill when slowing the tractor down in road gear. The sprag clutch will freewheel and that is hard on the rollers on the sprag clutch. Use it for more drawbar power or a slower gear ratio for PTO work. Keep Hy-Tran in the rear end, not 80 or 90 weight gear lube. Finally, keep the TA adjusted.
