I just went through a M rearend, it had the same problem as you described. my pilot bearing was bad and the bearing in the trans input housing, ( whatever it is called) also found alot of pieces in the bottom of the case.its not that much extra work to remove the sliding gear shaft if the front piece is out, the drive bolts are expensive from the dealer, but at least they are available.
