Fred, on the block above the magneto there is a flat spot with a number stamped on it. That's the engine serial number, and for early versions it corresponds to the tractor serial number. Get that and you should be able to track down the year. There are other indicators, though, like the height of the oil filter canister and details of the TDC pointer on the clutch cover that will help if you can't find that number.
