There is no number on the block by the magneto. My b has a distributor. There is a tag on the right side of the shifter plate just above the floorboard that looks like it could be a date. It looks like this 7/23/47. This seems to easy does anybody know if this a date or ?

Fred, on the block above the magneto there is a flat spot with a number stamped on it. That's the engine serial number, and for early versions it corresponds to the tractor serial number. Get that and you should be able to track down the year. There are other indicators, though, like the height of the oil filter canister and details of the TDC pointer on the clutch cover that will help if you can't find that number.

Unfortunately, I think that is the part number of a Super A block. Engine has been changed to a later one, so nothing on it will help.

Look on other castings for a date code. They will be cast in and look something like (*4.16.J*). The year is coded as a letter. This example is April 16, 1940. They will be between '39 and '47. The tractor was probably built a couple weeks or more past the latest one.
