My Farmall M has an 8v battery

Hi folks, Here in Western Kansas I just recently (like today at a farm auction) bought an Farmall M. Paid $450.00.Mostly in fair shape, body real straight, rims badly rusted and dead battery. This tractor has a 8 volt battery.
Is this a 8 volt system, or a 6 volt with a 8 volt battery put in. To be truthful, befor today I didn't know there were such a battery. Just my luck, of the two M's and two H's...this wasn't a 12 volt system.
What would a new 8 volt battery run, and where? And would it be better to change to a 12 volt? Thanks, Innkeeper...AKA, Don PS...I think you guys have a great site, hopefully one day I can post my before & after pics.
