This is a bit picky but I've heard it's not a good idea to use emery cloth on points. Apparently bits of the abrasive can remain on the surface. An electrical motor engineer recommended crocus cloth, then contact cleaner for cleaning points. Just my 2c.

I had a coil go bad on my battery ignition 12V H last year - would start O.K. and run for progressively decreasing amounts of time (but all around a few minutes) then die. A new coil fixed that fast but check the color of the spark.
