Paul,after you replace the cables if it still doesn't turn over right it might be a badly worn starter button.It should not get hot to the touch when starting.Had one that got hot for years and thought it was the nature of the brute.Read about that problem here on the Forum,Replaced the switch and got a pleasant surprise AND a fast starting 6 volt.
