Mornin Hugh,
I was thinkin the same thing. When I rebuilt the steering box on the Super A I had the tapered shaft on the bottom of the box, and other than the woodruff keyway, I dont see were you could damage the bottom seal! I just used some gear lube before assembly and didnt have any problem putting it together.
