Farmall 350D, were those cold blooded?.

Hello, went to a consignment auction and a guy had brought in a Farmall 350 diesel. It was in nice shape but the engine he said was cold blooded, even in the summer. He started it and it smoked a minute or two before straightening out and running smooth. I know diesels usually smoke on first start up, but this has me worried that maybe it's getting time for an overhaul if it starts hard in the summer too. Anybody have any experience with these and can tell me more about them. Also, were they hard on fuel?.
The reason I ask is because it didn't sell at the auction and is still there.
