The big advantage of using two six volt batteries in series is the reserve power. Very important when you have a heavy load on the electrical system. A typical 606 in cold weather will need the glow plugs for at least 60 seconds, mabey even 90 seconds, followed by about 10 seconds of cranking the engine while holding the glow plugs on. A single 12 volt will not provide enough cranking power with a drain like that, and will not last long.
