battery set-up in IH 606 diesel

I bought a nice IH 606 diesel today, and it only needs a couple of things fixed. The owner said it needed a battery, and we looked at the two brackets for 6 volt batteries, which are evidently wired to make a 12 volt system. He said he"d drop in a new single 12 volt battery for me, which would be as good or better than the factory setup. It sounds fine on the surface, but if it"s that simple, why didn"t the factory do it this way? Am I missing something here? Thanks for the advice you guys gave me on what to look for in a utility tractor for my small tree farm.
