If your M has a non-leaking radiator pressure cap, you do it with the motor cold, and you it QUICKLY, you can swap out the gage bulb without draining the system and will lose only a splash of coolant.

Keep in mind the original bulb screws into an odd, straight thread female x 1/2"(?) IPT male reducing bushing that's screwed into the head. Depending on the threading on your replacement gage bulb you may need to swap that bushing too.
