I would start by looking for casting codes. Casting codes can be found all over the tractor and should look something like N-21-4. What you want to look for is the letter that the casting code has in it. For example, if you have a tractor with the code N, it was made in 1944. You can find for codes for tractors on this website under the Tractor registry and other areas. As far as your small tank, that sounds like a duel fuel tractor. IH and many other companies offered tractors that would burn different fuels. You see the tractor would be started on Gas from the small tank you described and when it got hot could be switched over to diesel, kero or distilant. These fuels were cheaper than gas and helped farmers of the day. Hope this helps.
