1. Do what gene suggested. 2. Verify the wiring. The only wire running away from the generator should be the bat terminal. 3. Verify that the field post on the generator goes only to the field post on the regulator. 4. If the field wire runs off towards the switch box, then you either don't have a regulator or someone put a generator with a regulator on a tractor wired for a cut out and you could very well have mixed up wiring. If it is, and you don't have the original 4 pos switch, then your field wire is likely never getting grounded. 5. If the wiring looks like anything other than original - DON'T TRUST NUTTIN' ! Trace out the wires and verify.
